Questions answered in this video
How can a foreigner get an IT job in Japan through the study route?
Manoj Poudel from Nepal studied 2 years at a Japanese language school, then 2 years at a Japanese vocational college (senmon gakko). He started job hunting in his second year: interview practice, then applications, then a job offer from a Japanese IT company. In his opinion this is the easiest route, because companies recruit directly through the schools.
What JLPT level do I need for an IT job in Japan?
Manoj got his offer with JLPT N3, but competition has grown and many companies now ask for N2 or N1. Since April 2026, some first-time Engineer/Specialist in Humanities visa applicants must also show Japanese at about N2 level. Reports differ on the exact scope, so confirm the current rule with the Immigration Services Agency of Japan. He recommends aiming for N2 at least, ideally N1.
Can I get an IT job in Japan directly from Nepal or India?
Yes. Look for openings on LinkedIn, or apply on a company's website through its new-graduate or mid-career page. Manoj estimates that about 90% of Japanese IT company interviews are in Japanese. If you pass and the company sponsors your visa, you can move to Japan directly.
Do Japanese IT companies pay bonuses?
Most do, usually once, twice or up to three times a year. At Manoj's company the bonus is paid twice a year, but not in the first year of employment.
How do Japanese IT companies use AI?
At Manoj's company, AI needs approval from the project leader. Internal documents must never be pasted into AI tools, and using a tool like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude needs a written request with a reason. He uses AI to translate difficult Japanese test procedures into English, and uses Claude for software testing.
How is AI changing IT job interviews in Japan?
Large companies now test how you work with AI. When Manoj applied to Amazon Japan, the application included an assignment: find and fix bugs in C++ code using Copilot.
What is the best way for vocational college students in Japan to find an IT job?
Apply to the companies that come to your school for company info sessions (setsumeikai). Manoj found the chances there much higher than through job sites like Mynavi or LinkedIn. If no IT companies come, ask your teacher to help you find one.

00:00 Intro: 6 Months Working in IT in Japan
Hi, I'm Manoj Poudel. I'm from Nepal, and I'm currently working as a software engineer in Japan. Hello and namaste, everyone! Welcome to my vlog. To introduce myself briefly: I came to Japan in April 2022. Then I studied at a Japanese language school for two years, followed by two years at a Japanese vocational college. While I was there, I started job hunting in my second year. From interview practice to applying to companies, I eventually got a job offer from the company I work at now. It's now been six months since I started working at a Japanese IT company. What did I actually do in those six months? What really happens inside a Japanese IT company? Do the things you learn at a senmon college or university actually get used at work, or not? Plus, these days AI is everywhere, right? We're in the middle of an AI boom. This is the AI era. So how is AI used inside Japanese IT companies, and how am I using AI in my own work? I'll cover all of that in today's video. To start with, for the first one or two months, I spent my time learning the software my company uses.
01:09 What I Actually Do at a Japanese IT Company
Only after getting the hang of that software did I finally join a project. As for what I've been doing recently: right now, we're developing version 2 of the software our company sells. Once development is done, and before we finalize it, we have to test it. How is it tested? Let me give you an example. You know how websites get tested? You've probably done that at senmon college too. You check whether the screen design looks right, and when you click a button, whether it works, what result appears when you click it, and which page opens after you click it. That's the kind of testing you'd do. But our company isn't a web design company, so we don't do that kind of website testing. Our company's software is a digital twin of warehouses. A real warehouse is recreated on the computer, and we simulate what happens if robots do the work: what results you get, and how much faster the work gets if robots replace people. In big warehouses today, people carry goods back and forth, right? So what if robots carried the goods and did all that work instead? How much better would that be? Better, definitely. But if robots did it, how much faster would the work get? We calculate those results, and our company sells those results too. We're now building version 2 of that software, and we're the ones testing it. How do we test it? It's computer software, so we install it on our laptops, open it up, and run virtual environments, like a warehouse environment. Then we check how the robots are moving inside it, and whether they're heading in the right direction, and what results the robots are producing. There's an Excel file, the company's test file. In that Excel sheet, we add all the screenshots, including screenshots of the software, write every title in Japanese, note what result came out, and if there's a bug, what the bug was. We write all of that up and hand it to our team leader. That's what I've been doing recently. If you're curious what my Japanese level was when I interviewed at this company, it was only JLPT N3.
03:15 My Japanese Level & Japan's New 2026 Language Rule
But things have changed. Competition is much tougher now, so N3 alone might not be enough. Most companies are now looking for JLPT N2 or N1. Plus, back in my day, immigration didn't have these new rules, but now, under the new rules, immigration says you must pass at least JLPT N2 if you want to work in Japan on a work visa. That's the new rule. So if you want to work at a Japanese IT company, or any company in Japan, I'd say it's best to aim for JLPT N1, or at least N2. About a month ago, I took the JLPT N1 exam, and I've now passed N1 as well. Along with that, many of you also asked how to get a job at an IT company in Japan. So let me briefly share which route I took. First, I enrolled in a Japanese language school, then an IT college in Japan. While studying there,
04:03 Language School → Senmon → Job Offer (+ Direct Route)
I interviewed with Japanese IT companies, passed, got the job offer, and now I work at an IT company. If you want to come too, I think starting at a Japanese language school, then going on to a senmon college and applying from there is the best and easiest route. That's my view. And if you want to work at a Japanese IT company straight from Nepal, use LinkedIn. LinkedIn has job descriptions too. You can also go straight to the website of the company you want to join. If you're a new graduate, go to the new-graduate section and apply there, fill in the forms with your details, and you can apply from there. If you want a mid-career change, you can apply in the same place by filling in the forms. At 90% of IT companies in Japan, you'll have to interview in Japanese. If you pass and the company sponsors your visa, you can come straight to Japan from Nepal or any other country and work at an IT company. Earlier I mentioned how much AI is used, and how much easier AI has made work. But layoffs are happening too.
05:18 AI & the Oracle Layoffs: Whose Job Is at Risk?
Just recently, Oracle laid off a massive number of employees worldwide in a single day. Whose jobs is AI taking? People who were doing repetitive work. Ordinary coders who just type code without really thinking: instead of hiring coders like that, a lot of companies are now having AI write the code. As for how I use AI at work: for example, there are Japanese documents. Internal company documents can't just be pasted into AI for translation, because that's company policy. Company documents must never be casually put into AI. But some documents are fine to translate with AI; it doesn't really matter. Like I said earlier, for testing our company's software, there are documents with the testing steps written out. Those steps are in Japanese, and the kanji can be pretty hard. Even after passing JLPT N1, there are some kanji we just can't read. So with those documents, I first put them into AI and translate them into English, then follow the English steps exactly to test the software. On my current project, you can use AI only if the project leader approves it. Without approval, you're not allowed to use AI. The rules for using AI are written down, and we can only use it if we follow them. If you want to use AI, say ChatGPT, you have to fill in the company's application form saying, 'I want to use ChatGPT,' and explain why you need it. Only if the company approves it can you use ChatGPT. Even if you want to use Gemini, you first have to give a reason: which project it's for, and what it's for. If you give a proper, strong reason and the company approves it, only then can you use ChatGPT or other LLMs. Right now I'm using Claude, on the Claude Max plan. While version 2 is in development, I'm using Claude to test the software. Now, about the working environment: luckily, mine is super friendly and helpful. The staff around me are really helpful too. In the beginning, you don't know how a Japanese IT company works. When I didn't know what to do or how, they taught me the rules, how work runs at the company, and what the steps are, and explained the company documents. Some Japanese text has kanji I couldn't read. At first, you don't really know how things work at a company, right? Back then, my colleagues explained things in simple Japanese, keeping in mind that I'm a foreigner who might find it hard to understand.
07:22 Work Environment Inside a Japanese Company
And whenever I got stuck at work, if they were busy, I wouldn't go and ask. But when they weren't busy, if you say, 'If you have time, could you please help me?', they'll happily come over and teach you. Until I said, 'Okay, I've got it,' they'd keep teaching me, no matter how many times I asked. In Japanese companies, there are parties once, twice, or three times a year, like the bonenkai (year-end party).
08:24 Company Parties: Welcome Party & Anniversary
Sometimes there's a welcome party for new employees. Since I joined my company, I've been to two so far. Once, I went to a nomikai, which is a drinking party. And then just recently, there was the anniversary, so to speak. Every year, on the day our company was founded, which is October 10th, the company marks another year. This time, I think it turned 19, on October 10th, 2026. So on the 10th, everyone in the company, including the shacho, which means CEO, so from our CEO to all the managers and project leaders, everyone who works at our Tokyo head office, went out for dinner together. They take us to dinners like that two or three times a year. Pretty much all Japanese companies do this. And if you're wondering whether Japanese IT companies give bonuses, most Japanese companies do have bonuses.
09:25 How Bonuses Work in Japanese IT Companies
Some companies pay a bonus only once a year, some twice a year, and some up to three times a year. At my company, it's twice a year, but for the first year, there's no bonus. At some companies, you get your first bonus right after joining, but under our company's rules there's no bonus in the first year, so I haven't received one yet. I have received six months of salary, though. I already showed you my monthly salary in a previous video. In that video's description, I've put a link. If you open it, you'll see my salary slip. On that salary slip, I blurred my company's name for privacy reasons. Other than that, you can see my actual salary slip there. I explained everything in that video. Recently, our company also had an exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight in 2026.
10:14 Inside a DX Exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight 2026
At the exhibition, we explained what our company does, what software it sells, and what its main focus is. All kinds of customers come by, so we had to explain things, introduce our company, and walk them through our software. The exhibition ran for four days, and I went on one of them. I worked at the booth, and I've included a short clip of it in this video. Enjoy watching it! (in Japanese) The exhibition is right behind me. That's it for today's exhibition. Great work, everyone! So the last thing I want to say is this: if you also want to work at an IT company, focus on your Japanese first.
10:56 Want to Work in Japan? Why JLPT N2/N1 Matters
Get your Japanese really good. Once it's good, one route is to come to a Japanese language school first, then study at a Japanese vocational college, pass an interview at a Japanese IT company, and work there. Or, while staying in Nepal, you can build your Japanese up to the level needed to pass an interview, apply from there, and if you pass, you can come straight to Japan from Nepal. Oh, while walking, I've ended up at a Mercedes showroom!
11:29 Quick Stop: Mercedes Showroom
You can enjoy the Mercedes showroom too. And someday, maybe I'll buy a Mercedes too, if I make loads of money! That's life in Japan. As for my future plans, if you're wondering: first, I want to keep growing my IT skills and gain more experience where I work now.
11:44 My Future Plans
Along with that, if good chances come along, if there are opportunities at even better companies, I'll obviously switch companies to raise my standard of living and level up. It's only been six months, and I'm still in the learning phase. I still have a lot to learn. Life is too long, that's why we have a lot of time for learning. Life is all about learning, that's why I'm learning day by day, every day. My previous video, 'Salary in IT Company, Salary in Japan,' went quite viral in India too, and a lot of Indian viewers have been watching. But they don't understand Nepali, so they asked me, 'If possible, please make videos in English or Hindi too.' So for this video,
12:20 For My Indian Viewers (Hindi & English Help)
I'm adding subtitles. You can watch it with English subtitles. If you have any questions, just DM me. If you DM me in Hindi, I'll reply in Hindi, and if you'd like a reply in English, I'll reply in English too. So don't worry, feel free to DM me anytime. In this AI era, the main thing is this: alongside your studies, learn to use AI.
12:55 Surviving the AI Era + New AI-Era Interviews
Learn how to use AI in your work, your daily projects, and everyday life, and keep learning. AI is getting stronger and stronger every day. So build the habit of using AI, whether in your studies or at work if you have a job. Use AI to save time and raise the quality of your work. You really need to use AI. I use AI in my daily work too. These days, if we don't use AI, we could fall behind. So my suggestion to you is: use AI. And in this AI era, big companies have changed their interview styles too. I recently applied to Amazon Japan. Their application includes an assignment. After you fill in the forms, you get an assignment. In mine, using Copilot, you're given some C++ code with errors hidden in it. You use AI to figure out what the errors are, then use AI to fix them, and that's how you complete the assignment. So interview processes have changed a lot now. The way companies interview has changed because of AI. So you have to learn AI. Even when it comes to programming languages, things are now much harder than before, because with AI, companies now hire only the best of the best. So if you're preparing for companies or applying to them right now, keep sharpening your skills, and build the kind of skills AI can't replace. And one more thing I'd like to add. If you're at a senmon college right now and applying to companies, focus mainly on companies that hold setsumeikai (info sessions) at your college. That gives you a high chance.
14:38 Vocational College Students: How to Get a Job Offer
If you apply through Mynavi or LinkedIn instead, your chances are lower. So my main advice is: apply to the companies that come to your college for info sessions. If none come to your school, talk to your teacher and say, 'Please help me get a job at an IT company.' That makes it much easier to get in. Okay, that's all for today. If you liked this video, don't forget to like, share, and subscribe.

00:00 Intro: 6 Months Working in IT in Japan
Hi, I'm Manoj Poudel. I'm from Nepal, and currently I'm working as a software engineer in Japan. Welcome to my vlog.

08:24 Company Parties: Welcome Party & Anniversary
10:14 Inside a DX Exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight 2026
10:56 Want to Work in Japan? Why JLPT N2/N1 Matters
11:29 Quick Stop: Mercedes Showroom
11:44 My Future Plans
Life is too long, that's why we have a lot of time for learning. Life is all about learning, that's why I'm learning day by day, every day. यो भन्दा अगाडिको मेरो 'Salary in IT Company, Salary in Japan' भन्ने भिडियो इन्डियामा पनि धेरै भाइरल भएछ।

12:55 Surviving the AI Era + New AI-Era Interviews
Way of taking interviews

बाई-बाई, see you soon!
